ZONES IN
IPOH
Built heritage created by immense architectural, historical and cultural values, constitute as one of the most dominant characteristics that contribute significantly to the identity of places. Ipoh as one of Malaysia’s prominent city has unique characteristics which significantly contribute to its distinctiveness and identity.
In the midst of urban development and social economic changes, built heritage are often faced with constant threats of demolition, encroachment, refurbishment, abandonment and dilapidation. In the preliminary workshop stage, a relatively large number of historic buildings with varied architectural styles and typologies were identified through heritage place inventory, reflects the historical richness of Ipoh.
Architectural heritage inventory programmes can increase the effectiveness of town and city heritage management with links to local heritage legislation, built upon data standards, and maintain dedicated personnel, set activities, and systems on an ongoing basis. This is the key intent of the PUO programme organised by PAM Heritage Committee. Documentation of built heritage allows appreciation for the overall significance and importance of a place in the sense that they provide meaning, understanding, definition, and recognition of cultural significance and values, which is the ultimate aim of architecture conservation. While this does not necessarily mean that all built heritage can, should, or will be conserved, ignorance of historical architecture significance often leads to permanent loss of historic places.
Apart from the architectural heritage inventory workshop which was held from 5 to 19 November 2021, a physical exhibition at PAM Centre from 19th till mid December 2021 will take place. This collection of architectural heritage inventory and exhibition aims to highlight some of the noteworthy built heritage in Ipoh made available digitally on PAM-eR.com. Critical attributes of any successful online heritage database are accessibility with a readily available operating platform, intuitive search methods, and easily manageable data downloads, this are amongst the features PAM-eR have started and will continue to improve. The online record hopes to not just be records of heritage buildings but spur discussion among heritage professionals about increasing the necessity of inventory programs in Malaysian cities, and to create built heritage awareness across all generations and planning strategic heritage tourism.
