Background
Ungku Omar Polytechnic located in Jalan Raja Musa Mahadi (formerly known as Jalan Diary), Ipoh, Perak state was established in 1969. This polytechnic was established by the Malaysian Ministry of Education with the assistance of UNESCO. An allocation of RM24.5 million was obtained from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).This polytechnic took the name of the late Dato' Professor Ungku Omar Ahmad in memory of his service and contribution to the country and the nation, especially in the field of medical research.The Ungku Omar Polytechnic Campus is located in the Ampang area, Ipoh. At the end of 1973, the Polytechnic moved from the Daily Training Center to its permanent campus and was inaugurated on May 10, 1974 by Y.B. The Minister of Education at that time, the late Tun Abdul Razak b Hussein.This campus is now known as Campus A after the polytechnic took over the former Kinta Teachers College campus and was named Campus B in 1990. In the early stages of establishment, this polytechnic had four study departments namely Civil Engineering, Mechanical, Electrical and Trade. In 1972, the Department of Shipping Engineering was established with technical assistance and consultation from JICA.On March 1, 1999, two academic units were upgraded as Departments. The Mathematics and Science Unit became the Mathematics, Science and Computer Department while the Language/Religion Unit became the General Studies Department. Now, Ungku Omar Polytechnic has seven academic departments.
