PROJECT SYNOPSIS
The Conservation of Fort Brooke
Fort Brooke is located in Nanga Meluan, Julau. The building is protected under the Sarawak Heritage Ordinance 2019 (Chapter 77).
It was built in 1935 by Charles Vyner Brooke mainly to emphasise the White Rajah's power and control the locals' uprising who resisted the Brooke Administration ruling. The main prominent figure among the Ibans who revolted against the Brooke ruling was Asun Paing, an Iban warrior.
Initially, the building functions as a fort but experiences adaptive reuse, as a District Council Office, Police Station and Schools for the locals.
The conservation work on the existing building includes work on the timber column, floor, staircase, wall, ceiling and the belian roof. In addition, the existing toilet will be upgraded, and new fencing will be erected around the site.
