PROJECT SYNOPSIS
The Conservation of Fort Lili
Fort Lili is located at Jalan Datuk Patinggi Udin in Betong within the vicinity of public buildings such as the Majlis Daerah Betong and Masjid Jamek Betong. It used to be located along Sungai Layar, but the river has already dried up, probably being diverted elsewhere. The name was initially known as Fort Betong but later changed to Fort Lili, taking after Charles Brooke's wife, Margaret Alice Lili De Windt.
The building is protected under the Sarawak Cultural Ordinance 1993.
Fort Lili suffers from chronic structural problems ranging from sinking columns, sagging beams and leaning and buckling structural members, which severely affected the strength and stability of the building. Therefore, the building needs to be repaired and salvaged urgently to ensure that it can last longer.
The project involves dismantling works, reconstructing the foundations and rebuilding the buildings' main structure.
