PROJECT SYNOPSIS
The Conservation of Masjid Al Qadim
Masjid Al-Qadim is located at the junction of Jalan Kampung Nyabor and Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg, Sibu. Lembaga Amanah Kebajikan Islam Sibu (LAKIS) has been responsible for managing and maintaining the building. Masjid Al-Qadim is believed to be the third masjid in Sibu. The first and second masjid was built at Kampung Pulau Berendam area (Lau King Howe Hospital original site), but they were demolished to give way to the development of Fort Brooke and his administrative office. The precise date when Masjid Al-Qadim was built was not known. According to Jabatan Agama Islam Sarawak, Masjid Al-Qadim was built around 1861, while other documentation believed that the masjid was built two years before the volcanic eruption of Krakatoa in 1881.
The restoration of Masjid Al-Qadim was done in 3 phases. Phase 1 involved the restoration of the roof and minaret. Phase 2A involved the demolition work of the floor tiles and other structures that were not to the original design. Lastly, Phase 2B involved the restoration of the rest of the building components, rebuilding the ablution area, and construction of a new toilet area. In Phase 1, a temporary roof was installed to carry out the existing roof's dismantling, repair, and replacement work. The temporary roof was constructed from metal decking and steel posts, which allow sufficient height for working space within the covered area of the roof.
