PROJECT SYNOPSIS
The Conservation
of
Istana Kenangan
The Istana Kenangan building is located in Bukit Chandan, Kuala Kangsar, also known as the Royal Museum. Its construction began in 1926 by the order of D.Y.M.M. the late Sultan Iskandar Shah I (the 30th Sultan of Perak: 1918 - 1938). Istana Kenangan was a temporary palace for the Sultan to stay in while waiting for the main palace (Istana Iskandariah) to be completed.
The entire building material is made of timber, and the walls are made of bamboo. Before conservation began, a dilapidated study found that 42 poles had undergone significant decay and required new replacement. In addition, 444 pieces of bamboo woven wall panels, known as tepas, were also damaged and needed to be replaced with new ones.
Improvements were made to the roof by maintaining the shingle finish from belian wood but with two additional layers: waterproof plywood and aluminium sheets. Other elements such as carvings, floors, ceilings, doors and windows suffer damage ranging from 20% to 40%. Overall, this conservation has restored aesthetic value for future generations gaze.
