Building Typology:

Residence

Building Owner:

Encik Zulkarnain Bin Hassan

Traditional Malay House

Major Material:

- Timber & Concrete

Significant Features:

- Structure: Tiang 12 / Tiang Seri
- Material: Singgora roof
- Decoration: Wall Decoration (Janda Berhias)

This traditional house has a rich and unique history. The original structure of the house was built near the riverbank. However, a major flood (Bah) hit the area, the house had to be moved and rebuilt at its current location.

Although the house had been rebuilt and relocated, Mr. Zulkarnain and his family tried to maintain part of the original structure and interior features so that the traditional heritage and architecture of the house could be preserved.

For Mr. Zulkarnain, this house holds significance family legacy value.  He and his family had just moved into this house. Previously the house had been lived in and cared for by his parents.

Historical Background:

The new owner has just moved into the house.
The house was previously submerged by floodwaters in 2014.
Minor renovations have been carried out on the exterior and interior of the house.

Remark:

Building Layout

Building Structure

Column & Beam

The 'Rumah Ibu' area and part of 'Serambi' area were built after the relocation of this house, where the construction was built with bricks and concrete.

This house does not have a 'Tiang Seri' as main pillar. The house's pillars do not have a footing (the pillars punched into the ground directly).

The main construction method used for this house is the 'T-joint' method. The pillars are cut with a mortise called a 'Tanggam' while the beams are cut with a tenon (Pen) at the end.

Roof & Trusses

This house has a design similar to a five-rafter roof (Bumbung Perabung Lima). There are 3 types of gable end with different designs (One of the gable end located at the left side is unidentified).

Structural Material : Timber
Finishes : Zinc (current), Singgora (former)
Joinery Type : Tanggam
Material of Serambi's Roof & Ceiling : Aluminum foil & Timber Panel

Housing

Wall

Building Facade:

  • Timber louvers & timber plank wall

  • Concrete wall

'Serambi' Area:

  • Dark wood panel wall

  • Plain wall with wainscoting

'Ruang Ibu' Area:

  • Traditional Malay style dark wood wall panel with geometry(Janda Hias)

  • Layered timber plank wall painted in white with timber and metal frame

Doors & Windows

Kelantan Decorative Door (Main Door):

  • This entrance door of the house maintains elements of traditional Malay architecture with delicate decorative carvings, soft arches, decorated with Arabic calligraphy panels, along with unique designs such as a 'mimbar' or palace door.

  • Made from local hardwood, usually Cengal, because it is durable and suitable for carvings. The door frame made up of Cengal is thick and strong, showing the status and strength of the house's structure.

  • This door is considered as the "impression of the house", symbolizing the dignity, craftsmanship and fine arts of the Kelantan community. Besides it also reflects the combination of Malay culture and Islamic influence.

Windows

  • Most of the windows in this house use frosted glass panels which provide more privacy in certain spaces such as the kitchen door, bathroom, bedroom and the 'Serambi' area of the house adjacent to the neighbouring house.

Ornamentation

Materials and Functions

  • Materials: Traditional wood carvings (likely hardwoods such as Cengal or Meranti, commonly used in traditional Malay houses).

  • Functions: Railings or room dividers (partitions) on upper floors, verandah, or attics of houses.

Patterns and Motifs (Carving Art or 'Seni Ukir')

  • Types of Carving : 'Tebuk Tembus' carving (or 'Kerawang') carvings, where the pattern is carved completely through the wooden planks, allowing light to penetrate.

  • Motifs : Repeated geometric and floral patterns.

  • Main Form : A carved plank in the form of a column/bar arranged vertically.

  • Patterns : A pattern of clouds ('awan larat') or plants arranged symmetrically within each bar.

Visual Effects and Lighting

  • Effects : This carving functions to control lighting and ventilation while maintaining privacy.

  • Light : There is a sharp contrast between the dark part (the wood) and the light that enters through the carvings, creating the effect of silhouettes and shadows.

  • Color: The dark brown wood color stands out against the lighter wall or ceiling colors (light blue/ teal and pale pink).

  • These carvings are part of the railings that showcase traditional Malay wood carving.

  • The wood pattern functions as a partition that separates the space, while optimizing the flow of natural light and air.

  • These wooden bars, meticulously carved, create dramatic lighting effects and highlight Malay craftsmanship.
